Quigley Applauds Efforts to Reform NSA Surveillance Programs

January 17, 2014

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) released the following statement regarding President Obama’s recommendations to curb the National Security Agency (NSA) surveillance program:

“It is clear that substantial changes to the NSA’s surveillance programs are required to ensure the constitutional rights of the American people are protected. Many of the president’s recommendations represent the type of responsible reforms needed to rein in the NSA’s programs, increase transparency of the NSA and FISA Court and strike the right balance between protecting our national security and our constitutional rights.”

Rep. Quigley is an original cosponsor of the bipartisan USA FREEDOM Act, which ends the bulk collection of Americans’ communications records and makes FISA Court decisions that contain a significant interpretation of law available to the public. It includes several reforms recommended by the intelligence review panel appointed by President Obama earlier this year. Rep. Quigley is co-founder of the Congressional Transparency Caucusand has a record of fighting for increased transparency of the FISA Court on the Judiciary Committee.
