Quigley Announces Winner of 2016 Congressional Art Competition

CHICAGO – Yesterday, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) announced Maat Bates from Latin School of Chicago as the winner of the Congressional Art Competition for Illinois’ Fifth Congressional District. Her watercolor painting of a woman, untitled, will hang in the United States Capitol complex for the following year.

“The creativity displayed by Illinois’ Fifth District students is nothing short of extraordinary. It shows how talented these students are and how vital arts education is to our children’s education,” said Rep. Quigley. “I am proud to have Maat’s piece representing the Fifth District in the Capitol. Thank you to all who participated and special thanks to the National Veterans Arts Museum for hosting this year’s competition in such an esteemed venue.”

Karina Kuyek from Ridgewood High School placed second with her piece “Chief,” and Fatimah Wahidi from Mather High School’s “Chicago Theatre” placed third in the art competition. Karina’s “Chief” and Fatimah’s “Chicago Theatre” will be displayed in Rep. Quigley’s D.C. and District offices.

Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors the Congressional Art Competition, a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated.
