Dear Friend,

As one of nine Democrats serving on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and the only Member from Illinois, I want to share an update on our ongoing investigation into Russian interference in our election and President Trump’s ties with Russia.

President Trump is now the only person in Washington still denying what the rest of us have known all along: Russia interfered in our democratic process and will do so again if given the chance. FBI Director James Comey confirmed the validity of this intrusion during Monday’s open hearing and also announced the existence of the FBI’s federal investigation into the Trump campaign’s Russian ties.

diligent in our search for answers.

Another major takeaway from Monday’s hearing was FBI Director Comey’s confirmation that no evidence exists to support President Trump’s baseless wiretapping claims. Unfortunately, the president’s tweets are just another example of his efforts to distract attention away from a bad news cycle and the real national security issues at hand.

The Intelligence Committee has always operated in a bipartisan fashion, which allows us to examine classified information in a way that influences policy and keeps our nation safe. That is why I was very disappointed and surprised by Chairman Nunes’ decision to meet privately with President Trump about new allegations without first consulting members of the Committee. In order to lead a credible, bipartisan investigation, we must have his cooperation and commitment.

This critical investigation is just beginning, and I remain as committed to its mission as ever. I will continue to follow the facts wherever they lead in order to ensure the American people know exactly what took place.
