Republican Tax Bill Puts Working Families Last
Dear Friend,
Yesterday, before Congress left town for the Thanksgiving holiday, House Republicans spent their last voting day passing a tax bill that provides a massive giveaway to the top 1 percent on the backs of middle-class families.
I want to say thank you to the many constituents who contacted my office to tell us how this shameful bill will impact you. As of Friday, November 17th, Fifth District residents have made their strong opposition known through a total of 1,369 emails and calls. I appreciate you taking the time to make your voices heard.
By prioritizing tax cuts for billionaires and corporations, this tax bill is a very clear disinvestment in our future and that of the hardworking Americans who spur economic growth and strengthen our communities. This legislation makes zero economic sense, especially at a time when income inequality is out of control.
This bill will explode deficits by $1.5 trillion over the next decade, resulting in a manufactured debt crisis that Republicans will use to force devastating cuts to Medicare and Medicaid, which Illinois families rely on. While President Trump and his friends and family will significantly benefit, it is our seniors, homeowners, teachers, and students who stand to lose the most.
The American people deserve a tax code that's simple and fair for families striving to obtain economic opportunities and the American Dream, and I will keep fighting for bipartisan tax reform that achieves those goals.
I am grateful for the opportunity to represent you in Congress, and I wish you and your family a happy Thanksgiving.
Sincerely,
Mike Quigley
