Reminder: Health Care Open Enrollment is Now Underway!
Dear Friend,
I'd like to take a minute to share a quick reminder with you about the 2018 open enrollment period, which began this week and runs through December 15! If you or someone you know is in search of health insurance for the New Year, be sure to visit www.healthcare.gov to review plans, explore your options, and get covered before the deadline.
Since the Affordable Care Act was signed into law, more than 20 million Americans have gained access to coverage, resulting in the lowest uninsured rate in American history. From prohibiting insurance companies from refusing coverage based on pre-existing conditions to allowing young people to stay on their parents' plan until age 26, the ACA has expanded access to care for Americans from every walk of life. In Illinois alone, more than 350,000 people are enrolled in plans purchased through the exchange, including 18,000 right here in the Fifth District.
I believe that quality, affordable health care is a right—not a privilege—which is why I am standing up against President Trump's shameful attempts to undermine this life-saving law. The Administration has slashed the 2018 open enrollment period in half (just 45 days long!) and cut spending on outreach and advertising by 90 percent. If people don't know that it's time to enroll, they also probably don't know where to go or how to sign-up. If you are looking for further assistance, you can visit the Enrollment Assistance Center near you. Trained enrollment specialists can provide you with free and helpful information on how to qualify for financial assistance, how to start an application, how to re-enroll, and more.
And as always, if you have any questions, feel free to call my district office at (773) 267-5926. With the holiday season now underway, I wish you all a happy and healthy remainder of 2017!
