Don't Forget the Debt

Dear Friend,

As Americans work to recover from a near collapse of our financial system, double-digit unemployment, and a housing market where seemingly more people are losing homes than buying them, I frequently hear your understandable concerns about the economy.

People are worried about jobs in a tough market and providing for their families when there is simply less to go around. Amidst this urgency, we must remember that our efforts to secure greater economic security today must not come at the expense of our stability tomorrow.

That means getting serious about our sky-rocketing national debt.

Please tell me what you think about our national debt by taking this short survey.

Public debt is projected to rise to more than twice the size of our economy by 2025 and three times its size by 2050. To put this in perspective, it means that just 15 years from now, the cost of our debt will be double the value of all the combined goods and services produced in the United States.

These historic projections mean more than just red ink for our children. Left unchecked, debt can force cutbacks in government services, decrease private investment, result in higher taxes, weaken the dollar, affect our ability to react to future crises, and bankrupt social security and Medicare for the baby boomer generation and beyond.

I am always working to solve the problems of right now, especially given the dire situation faced by so many of my constituents. But as we work toward solutions, we must keep an eye on the future.

I've co-sponsored legislation that makes sure Congress plans for every dollar spent today, and every dollar we will spend in the future"and called on the budget committee to report an honest and complete budget.

What do you think? As your representative in Congress, I want to hear your thoughts on important issues like this.
