Catching Up With Quigley: Week of March 10

Dear Friend,

Today, Republicans pushed through a dangerous government funding bill that further empowers Elon Musk and DOGE. While I did not want a shutdown, I do want the Republican majority and Donald Trump to start making decisions that help my constituents instead of hurting them. Here's what I did this week to try to make that a reality.

1. Demanded Elon Musk's Firing and the Disbandment of DOGE

On Tuesday, I voted against the Republican effort to fund the government. I believe there is no room for business as usual when the President and his administration are dismantling the federal government. I refuse to vote for the CR unless the administration stops gutting federal services and starts taking genuine steps to improve government efficiency. That begins first and foremost with the firing of Elon Musk and the end of DOGE.

2. Called Out Republican Hypocrisy Over Government Funding Bill

House Republicans bragged about how their bill would fully fund the government but full funding doesn't matter if there's no one left at government agencies to run the programs Americans rely on. I took to the House floor this week to call out Republican hypocrisy for refusing to stand up to Trump and Musk. There are real steps we could take to improve the government. What Republicans and Trump are doing is only hurting Americans.

3. Signed a Letter Defending Free Speech and Due Process

I co-signed a letter with 102 of my colleagues to the Departments of State and Homeland Security demanding answers about the arrest of Mahmoud Khalil, a former Columbia graduate student, and the stripping of his Green Card. Khalil has not committed a crime and the administration has not accused him of committing a crime, yet they are attempting to revoke his Green Card and remove him from the United States. As my colleagues and I wrote, this is "the playbook of authoritarians, not of elected officials in a democratic society who claim to be champions of free speech."
