10 Minutes Can Make a Huge Difference
The past few weeks have shown that civic engagement is more important than ever. A small but meaningful action that you can take right now is completing the 2020 Census yourself or encouraging others to do so if you already have. The 2020 Census became available for response in March at my2020census.gov but as of today, only 53.7% of the Chicago area has responded so far.
In the midst of everything that is happening, completing the Census may be the last thing on your mind. But the 10 minutes that it takes to complete the Census is a critical investment in ensuring that our community has the resources that it needs to meet the challenges we face ahead.
The Census isn’t just about funding, it’s about power. The results of the Census are used to determine how many congressional districts each state gets. If a state like ours is undercounted, that means that the people of that state aren't being fairly represented in Congress.
The results of the 2020 Census will shape the future of our community for the next decade. Unfortunately, due to the spread of COVID-19, outreach to encourage community members to respond to the 2020 Census has been postponed or canceled and the risk of an undercount of many communities is high.
Your census responses are safe and secure. The Census Bureau is required by law to protect any personal information they collect and keep it strictly confidential. The Census Bureau can only use your answers to produce statistics. Your answers cannot be used for law enforcement or immigration purposes or to determine your personal eligibility for government benefits.
This is your chance to shape YOUR future and the future of Illinois. I hope you’ll join me in participating in the 2020 Census.
