Quigley Statement on Second Impeachment of President Trump
Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) released the following statement after voting in support of impeaching President Donald Trump:
“Today, I voted to impeach President Donald Trump for a second time.
“The facts are plain. One week ago, on Wednesday, January 6, 2021, President Trump incited an attack against the United States Capitol and the legislative branch of our government. The aim of this insurrection was to overturn the results of a free and fair election that he lost and came after weeks of the President’s repeated lies about the 2020 election. After the violence began, President Trump refused to act to bring it to an end, and in the days since, he has shown no remorse.
“The framers created the separation of powers as a cornerstone of our government. A violent attempt by the head of the Executive Branch to prevent the Legislative Branch from taking an action with which he disagreed is an unacceptable violation of the Constitution and cannot be allowed to stand.
“By initiating an attack against the very foundation of our democracy, the President committed high crimes and misdemeanors. Through his actions since – remaining unrepentant for his incitement and repeating his election lies – he has demonstrated that he poses a clear and present danger to the security of our country.
“If Members of Congress wish to uphold our oaths of office and protect and defend the Constitution, President Trump must be convicted and removed from office immediately.”
Earlier today, Quigley spoke from the floor of the House of Representatives in support of the article of impeachment. Video of his speech is available HERE.
