Quigley Reaction to President Trump’s Joint Address

Mar 1, 2017
Press Release

WASHINGTON – Today, Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) released the following statement in response to President Trump’s first joint address to Congress last night:

“President Trump’s joint address to Congress was long on rhetoric but short on details; and while it was less inflammatory than what we have come to expect, the lack of substance was glaring. We heard populist sound bites but no real policy initiatives that will advance economic opportunity for middle class Americans, strengthen national security here at home, and build on the undeniable progress made during the past eight years. It is simpler to attack affordable health care, our vulnerable immigrant communities, and cities struggling with gun violence than it is to advance bipartisan efforts that address the many challenges our country faces. Meanwhile, it is also easier to ignore difficult issues if they do not aid your agenda, which is why we heard no mention of Russia hacking into our democratic process during his address to Congress. While I am pleased that the President mentioned cooperation on infrastructure investments, it remains to be seen if his actions will match his words. The American people deserve concrete solutions to move our country forward, and I stand ready to work with my colleagues across the aisle, as well as hold them and our President accountable, in order to make that happen.”
