Quigley Convenes Chicago Latino Leaders, Immigration Advocates for Roundtable Discussion on Key Issues

September 19, 2018

CHICAGO – To celebrate the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) convened Chicago Latino leaders and immigration advocates for a discussion on family separation, the status of Dreamers, and other major issues facing members of the Hispanic community. You can view the entire discussion here.

"I come away from this discussion with a greater appreciation for the many contributions made by the Latino community and a renewed determination to fight for legislative action that honors equal opportunity and equal justice for all individuals who call America home," said Rep. Quigley. "The skilled leaders and passionate advocates that I met with today are making a substantial, positive difference in our communities that is felt by us all, and I look forward to continuing to work with them on immigration policy, job creation, education, and so many other issues that require our immediate attention in Congress."

The roundtable discussion focused on key legislative issues that impact Hispanic Americans and provided an opportunity to discuss the many ways in which the Latino community is making Illinois stronger, safer, and more successful. Rep. Quigley asked the attendees about the challenges they and other members of their organizations face, as well as for feedback on legislative solutions that would help make a difference.

Roundtable participants included representatives from Erie Neighborhood House, Mujeres Latinas en Accion, National Immigrant Justice Center, FWD.US, Latino Policy Forum, Resurrection Project, Latino Union of Chicago, Northwest Side Housing, and Options for Youth.

From working to expand access to Immigration Help Desks to the protection of sanctuary cities and improvement of our nation's immigration detention centers, Rep. Quigley been advocating for fair, common-sense immigration policy since coming to Congress in 2009. In July, he cosponsored legislation condemning Attorney General Sessions' decision to declare gang violence and domestic violence as invalid reasons to seek asylum. In June, Rep. Quigley offered an amendment to the Homeland Security appropriations bill to combat ICE's inhumane and ineffective detention policy by moving funding to the Urban Area Security Initiative and has proudly cosponsored the Keep Families Together Act to address the Trump Administration's cruel policy of detaining children at the border.
