Quigley Statement on President Obama’s Proposed Budget

February 9, 2016

CHICAGO – Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05),a member of the House Appropriations Committee, released the following statement in response to President Obama’s proposed budget for the 2017 fiscal year:

“President Obama’s fiscal year 2017 budget represents a serious attempt to address many of the critical issues facing our country by making the investments we need to accelerate and sustain economic growth in the long run. By making bold, forward-looking investments in education and national security, infrastructure and innovation, creating good-paying jobs and expanding the opportunities of hard-working American families, the President’s budget shows that we can afford to make smart investments in our country’s future while remaining fiscally responsible. I was also encouraged to see that the President’s budget replaces harmful sequester cuts that have held back our economy with a smarter and more balanced approach to long-term deficit reduction.

“As the only Illinois member of the House Appropriations Committee, I have been a strong advocate for a budget that is both fiscally responsible and makes critical investments in our country’s future. I’m working hard to ensure that we are spending our taxpayer dollars wisely, pushing for increased funding in areas like science, education, national security and infrastructure, while encouraging targeted cuts in areas like our outdated and ineffective nuclear weapons arsenal. I look forward to advocating for these reforms in order to create a strong future of security, prosperity and optimism for all Americans. ”
