Quigley Brings Home $40 Million to Modernize Chicago’s Union Station
U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05), a member of the House Appropriations Committee, announced the approval of $40 million towards modernizing Chicago’s Union Station (CUS). The funding was part of Amtrak’s Fiscal Year 2024 annual appropriations requests and was included in the FY24 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations bill that was signed into law by President Biden on March 23, 2024.
“Union Station is the heart of Midwest passenger rail, serving millions of riders each year that depend on the station to get to work, visit their families and travel through America’s heartland. Given its importance to our region, it is common sense that we modernize the station to effectively service its riders. This funding will allow expansion of the existing CUS street-level entrances, improve accessibility, and enhance the overall architecture by removing low ceilings and creating double-height spaces,” said Quigley. “I am proud to have worked to secure this funding for our community and look forward to the impact it will have for riders across our city, state and region.”
The $40,000,000 in funding approved today will go towards design, acquisition, and construction activities to improve the concourse and related infrastructure. Concourse and mezzanine renovation will improve safety and accessibility, expand access, and increase capacity. Project work may also include mail platform construction, dynamic signage, widening grade crossings and other passenger safety enhancements and refinements. In December, Rep. Quigley and members of the IL Delegation worked to secure $93 million improvements to Union Station through a Department of Transportation grant. This funding is part of the larger, Chicago Hub Improvement Project, being led by Amtrak.
