CHICAGO – Yesterday, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) announced Zhi Wei Tan from Lincoln Park High School as the winner of the Congressional Art Competition for Illinois' Fifth Congressional District. Her oil on canvas, "A Mother's Hard Work," will hang in the United States Capitol complex for the following year.

"It is inspiring to see the rich artistic talent of young people on display in this competition," said Rep. Quigley. "I congratulate Zhi Wei Tan on her fine art work and am proud to have it represent Illinois' Fifth District to people visiting our nation's Capital. I want to thank the National Veterans Arts Museum for hosting this year's competition and allowing students to display their work in such a prominent museum setting."

Victoria Kospin from Ridgewood High School and Carlos Ayala from Lawrence Hall Youth Services tied for second place, and Ridgewood High School's Joseph Palmisano won third place. Victoria's "Dreamer" and Carlos' "The Dragon" will be displayed in Rep. Quigley's Washington, D.C. office and Joseph's "Look Up" will be hung in Rep. Quigley's Chicago office.

Each spring, a nation-wide high school arts competition is sponsored by the Congressional Institute and Members of the U.S. House of Representatives. It is an opportunity to recognize and encourage the artistic talent in the nation. Southwest Airlines will fly Zhi Wei Tan, as well as all other winners, to Washington, D.C. for a ceremony this summer. The annual competition features art from each of the 435 congressional districts across the country.
